Implemented during hybrid learning in 2021, “Where Everybody Belongs” (WEB) at District 191 middle schools is a transition program aimed at welcoming incoming sixth graders and helping them feel comfortable and supported as they navigate their middle school experience.

Eagle Ridge Middle School and Nicollet Middle School are excited to welcome incoming sixth-graders and families to our Explore Middle School events from 6-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10. 

Teachers can sign up for a time during the day to team teach, use the makerspace or change up their space for a special project or quiet reading.

Talented players from across District 191 competed at the annual chess tournament, held at Diamondhead Education Center on Saturday, Dec. 6. Students from elementary through high school demonstrated skill, strategy and excellence as they participated in multiple matches throughout the day, with several personal achievements and record-making performances.

Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 residents are invited to meet with Superintendent Dr. Latanya Daniels at a series of informal community conversations over the next several weeks. 

This annual fundraiser supports BrainPower in a Backpack, a largely student-supported community service program that provides weekend meals to students and families in need across Burnsville, Eagan and Savage.

Nicollet Middle School chess coach Brian Ribnick recently received the Andy Lerner Award for Excellence in Chess Education from Chess in the Schools. The award recognizes educators’ impact on the chess community and students.

Brian Burthay, a parent in Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 and co-chair of the district’s American Indian Parent Advisory Committee, was named the Minnesota Indian Education Association (MIEA) Coach of the Year. He was presented with the award at the MIEA conference earlier this spring. 

The Nicollet Middle School chess team brought home a national title after traveling to Orlando May 9-11 for the National Middle School Chess Supernationals. 

The Burnsville High School Theatre Guild is closing out Season 64 with "The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical," an electrifying show based on the best-selling novel by Rick Riordan.

Current 8th-grade students and their families are invited to an 'Explore BHS' event on April 29 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Burnsville High School, 600 E. Highway 13 in Burnsville. 

Thanks to a grant through the MacPhail Center for Music called the Noteworthy Instruction Program, orchestra students at Nicollet Middle School have been able to receive an additional 25 hours of targeted music instruction this year. 

The District 191 Special Education Advisory Council (SEAC) has partnered with the PACER Center to present "The ABCs of the IEP" on Tuesday, April 14, from 6:30-8 p.m. at Diamondhead Education Center, 200 W. Burnsville Pkwy in Burnsville. 

Twelve middle school students in District 191 have been selected to the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) of Minnesota State Honor Choir. This is the highest honor a middle school choir student can achieve in Minnesota. 

Thanks to a partnership between District 191 Community Education and Youth Dance Ensemble – a non-profit organization that provides dance training and performance – the Modern Dance Project offers barrier-free access to dance education for all learners.

Fifteen Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 staff members are being recognized for their extraordinary contributions to the One91 community with 2025 Community of Excellence (COE) Awards. 

In February, several students at Eagle Ridge Middle School participated in the regional National History Day competition held at Central Middle School in Eden Prairie. One project, “The Grimké Sisters,” by seventh graders Bersabeh “Bersy” Chakiso, Harmony Mayes and Kamyah Michel, advanced to state competition. The students chose to do an exhibit, which included a process paper and annotated bibliography.

Once again, staff members will be presenting “Class Acts,” a comedy variety show, to raise scholarship funds for graduating seniors in Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191. This is the 37th year of staff performances in District 191.

Thanks to a collaboration between District 191 Food and Nutrition Services and Eagle Ridge Middle School (ERMS) staff, students at the school have the exciting opportunity to harvest greens through hydroponic technology. 

9th Grade Academy encompasses everything BHS students and staff are doing, both inside and outside the classroom, to help ninth graders successfully transition to high school.

Through Pathways, every student in sixth and seventh grade experiences a variety of classes each quarter with teachers who focus on expanding opportunities and fueling interests.

District 191 Community Education will host two chess tournaments on Saturday, Dec. 14 at Diamondhead Education Center, its annual One91 student tournament as well as the Burnsville Club and Action tournament, which has individual, club and team divisions and is open to the public.

At Nicollet Middle School, a visit to the media center means more than just checking out books. Classes visit the media center weekly for sessions with media specialist Nancy Meyer, who teaches students how to access helpful online resources. 

Based on the hit 2004 movie “Mean Girls,” this musical adaptation tells a wickedly hilarious and heartfelt story. Audiences can look forward to dynamic dance numbers, unforgettable characters and catchy songs. It’s going to be so fetch!

Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 is proud to announce the launch of the Caring Community Series, a four-event series designed to support the well-being of One91 students and families. 

The 2024-25 school year in District 191 will include two early release days to accommodate professional development required by new state laws.

District 191 will host a Multilingual Family Night on June 3 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Cliff Fen Park, 120 Cliff Road East in Burnsville.

The championship was the second ever for Nicollet Middle School to go along with dozens of previous national titles. Keiran Martin led the U700 team, finishing as the top player in the country in that category.

Burnsville High School (BHS) junior Cristian Gamboa has been selected to speak at this year’s AVID Summer Institute, which is AVID’s premier learning event for professionals. More than 40,000 educators are expected to attend Summer Institutes in 10 different locations held throughout the summer.

Nicollet Middle School special education teacher Megan Tillman recently received the Inclusive Educator Award, given by Intermediate School District 917. The award was presented as part of Inclusive Schools Week to highlight and celebrate the progress schools have made in implementing inclusive practices to ensure a quality education for all students. 

 Burnsville High School Theatre Guild is delighted to announce the highly anticipated winter play, “Peter and the Starcatcher,” a whimsical and imaginative play by Rick Elice, with music by Wayne Barker, that serves as a prequel to the classic tale of Peter Pan.

With a cast and crew of 17, “Tartuffe” is the BHS Theatre Guild’s 2024 Competition One Act play and will be featured in the Guild’s Evening of One Acts on Jan. 26 and 27 at 7 p.m. at Burnsville High School’s Mraz Center.

It’s nearly December in Minnesota and that means that wintry weather could come at any time and affect the school day. We want families to be as prepared as possible when that happens

We’ve teamed up with MySchoolBucks, an online service that allows you to easily and securely pay for school meals and a la carte items using a credit/debit card or electronic check. Though student school meals (one breakfast and one lunch) remain free of charge to most K-12 students, parents/guardians can deposit additional funds into meal accounts using MySchoolBucks, which is replacing our current online service, PayPAMS.

Even though meals are free for most students, District 191 asks all families to complete the Alternate Application for Educational Benefits. By filling out the Alternate Application for Educational Benefits, families may qualify for additional benefits such as reduced or waived athletic and activities fees, reduced transportation fees, discounts on internet service, emergency food benefits, and more. 

Welcome to the 2023-24 school year! We are so excited to welcome students back to school. The first day of school for most students is Tuesday, Sept. 5.

Current eighth-grade students and their families are invited to attend an information night at Burnsville High School on Wednesday, May 24. 

District 191 is dedicated to ensuring student success, and one way we achieve this is through our schoolwide AVID programs. AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, allows students to move forward and succeed to their fullest potential. Success is not just about talent, but about determination, hard work and a willingness to reach for your goals.

Twenty-six employees, who have contributed a grand total of 663 years of service to Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191, are retiring during or after the 2022-23 school year. 

The Nicollet Middle School chess team was crowned national champs in the K-8 blitz tournament of the U.S. Chess Federation National Championships held April 20-23 in Austin, Texas. This is Nicollet’s first national title.

Written by Nicollet Middle School teacher Steven Orth, the Drama Experience production, “How 2 Save Your Friends (While Finding a Treasure in 5 Easy Nonsensical Steps)” opens May 4 at Nicollet Middle School, located at 400 E. 134th St., in Burnsville. 

District 191 will offer summer programs that provide additional support to meet the needs of all learners. There are many opportunities available for students, including One91 academic programming, Community Education enrichment and childcare opportunities, and summer athletic camps.

Nicollet Middle School and William Byrne Elementary chess teams were crowned champions at the Minnesota State Scholastic Chess tournament held March 4-5 in St. Paul.

District 191 is proud to provide a comprehensive arts experience from pre-kindergarten to graduation that stokes academic achievement and provides amazing experiences for all students.

After twice being rejected by the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL), boys volleyball, which has been a club sport for several years, is on the way to becoming a sanctioned high school sport.

One91 Middle Schools - Eagle Ridge and Nicollet - are thrilled to welcome incoming sixth-graders and their families to our Experience Middle School events! Middle school years are critical in the development of students, which is why we’ve designed our learning to foster exploration and nurture creativity as students consider their future. 

District 191 held its annual chess tournament on Dec. 17 at Diamondhead Education Center. In partnership with District 191 Community Education, the event was organized by Brian Ribnick, retired District 191 math teacher, and Jiten Patel. 

Through last spring’s budget process, District 191 prioritized the return of middle school athletics after a four-year absence due to budget shortfalls. More than 120 students participated in soccer, cross-country and girls’ tennis this fall. Basketball and wrestling return to the winter season, and track and field and boys’ tennis will be back in the spring. 

An initiative by the national company The Boomerang Project, which specializes in school culture and student connectivity, Link Crew is an activity-based program meant to build excitement about starting high school through student-to-student mentorships, fun events, and much more. BHS started exploring using the program in 2018 and after being delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, launched a modified version in 2021, with a full launch in 2022. 

Students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades are excited to try new things, begin to explore what is important to them and dive deep into subjects. Exploratory classes at Eagle Ridge and Nicollet middle schools allow students to do just that in areas like family and consumer sciences, art, health, computer technology, and Project Lead the Way engineering.

All elementary families in District 191 are invited to attend our Explore Middle School open houses from 6-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at Eagle Ridge and Nicollet middle schools. You will have the opportunity to tour the school, talk to the principal and staff, and learn more about the middle school experience. 

Whether it was teaching swim lessons out of her parents’ backyard pool as a teenager, participating in beauty pageants in high school, running a sewing school for young children as a stay-at-home mom, managing home-based businesses, supervising student teachers, doing preschool screenings or teaching students how to cook, she explored opportunities where she could thrive as an educator, entrepreneur and artist. All these experiences have helped shape her into the innovator that she truly is.

There are a lot of different options for students to pursue after high school, ranging from starting a career to pursuing a degree. The new Associate of Arts Pathway at Burnsville High School (BHS) lets students get a head start on what comes next in a way that no other district is doing, by earning an associate degree without ever leaving the building. 

The Nicollet Middle School chess club – the Nicollet Knights – will hold a celebration and chess board rededication event on Sept. 27 from 6-8 p.m. at Nicollet Middle School.

District 191 Superintendent Dr. Theresa Battle announced that Frannie Becquer will be the next principal for Nicollet Middle School. 

Beginning the 2022-2023 school year, middle school students will be able to participate in athletics at their school. 

Whether it’s helping a neighbor or a classmate, donating supplies, time, or money to regional charities, or finding ways to contribute on a more global level, the commitment to service is strong here. Our students are a shining example of that.  

No single person embodies the culture of community service in District 191 quite like Shrey. Growing up in Savage, Shrey was surrounded by a family who showed him different aspects of the world, teachers who encouraged him, and a community who rallied behind his efforts. It started when he was three years old and his mother Seema took him to a local teen homeless shelter where she served on the board. 

The Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 Board of Education approved changing the end time of the instructional day at the district’s two middle schools from 2:50 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. starting with the 2022-23 school year.

Dr. Angie Pohl will be named the next principal for Vista View Elementary School. She will start her new role at Vista View this summer, following the retirement of Principal Nepsund.

A partnership with the University of Minnesota Extension brings Cooking Matters, a cooking-based, nutrition education program, to District 191 middle school students.

Based on new guidance released by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the District 191 Board of Education approved the following health and safety protocol changes for District 191 schools.

SEL is an integral part of education and human development. It’s the process through which young people and adults acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and skills they need to do several things — recognizing and managing their emotions, demonstrating caring and concern for others, establishing positive relationships, making responsible decisions, and handling challenging situations constructively.

District 191 will be presenting important information on English Learner education, additional opportunities for learning for families and students, and the ACCESS for ELs test.

Part of the One91 Pathways journey, the Automotive Pathway allows students to gain skills relevant to industry standards and be well positioned for employment and/or further education after graduation. The program at BHS supports a future-ready employment base for the automotive industry.

Fundraiser to supply school health offices with culturally-appropriate clothing brings in more than triple the goal – thanks to support from District 191 staff and community, as well as donors from around the country.

A recent announcement from the Minnesota Department of Education has led to some changes in the start of the District 191 school year. The following shows how and when the school year will start by grade level.

District 191 partners with a variety of organizations so that families have multiple ways to secure food resources. Along with our very own programs, including BrainPower in a Backpack and 191 Community Pantry, One91 is helping families become food secure during these uncertain times.

The Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 Board of Education approved a mask requirement for staff, students and visitors in District 191 schools to start the 2021-22 school year as part of the district’s health and safety protocols in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Beginning Monday, Aug. 9, face coverings will be required in all District 191 schools and buildings for visitors and staff, regardless of their vaccinations status. 

District 191 has been recognized as a 2021 Sustaining Exemplar Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) District through the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE).

At Nicollet and Eagle Ridge Middle Schools, leaders know that a sense of belonging is one of the keys to helping students have success in their school journey. 

The Nicollet Middle School chess team won the 2021 Middle School Chess state championship, held virtually April 10-11. It was Nicollet's first time in school history to win the state chess title.

Making community happen at a school-size scale is no easy task. You need coordinated effort from staff, students and administration, plus a vision that’s compelling enough to catch fire. And that’s exactly what District 191 Middle School leaders believe can happen with the Where Everybody Belongs (WEB) program.

AVID is a program dedicated to equipping students with strategies to prepare for greater academic rigor as they move through their school years and start thinking about college and career preparedness.

At a Jan. 21 school board meeting, the Pathways steering team — led by Kathy Funston, Director of Strategic Partnerships & Pathways and Imina Oftedhal, Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment — clarified implementation plans over the next three school years. 

All students in grades 6–12 have access to fine-free student public library cards through Dakota County and Scott County libraries. This partnership means students can easily access library resources including online one-on-one homework help, research tools, e-books, audiobooks, movies/TV DVDs, music CDs, translation services, electronic magazines and print books.
